UCF Football: A History of Success and Innovation

From Humble Beginnings to National Prominence

UCF Football has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1979 as a non-scholarship program competing in the NCAA Division II. In the early 1990s, UCF Football made the jump to Division I-AA, and just four years later, in 1996, they won their first national championship at that level.

Just five years after winning the Division I-AA national championship, UCF Football made the jump to Division I-A, now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). In 2005, the Knights played their first game as an FBS independent, and just two years later, they joined the Conference USA.

In 2011, UCF Football joined the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The AAC era has been the most successful in UCF Football history. The Knights have won two AAC championships, and they have played in a New Year's Six bowl game in each of the past two seasons.
