File For Tax Extension Irs

Extension of Time to File Taxes

Don't Miss the Deadline: Get an Extension Today

How to Apply for an Extension

If you're not ready to file your taxes by the April 15th deadline, you can request an extension. An extension gives you an extra six months to file your return, but it's important to note that it does not extend the deadline to pay any taxes you owe. The payment deadline remains April 15th, even if you file for an extension.

File by Mail

To file for an extension by mail, you can use Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return. Fill out the form and mail it to the IRS address listed on the form. You must file Form 4868 by the April 15th deadline.

File Online

You can also file for an extension online using IRS Free File. IRS Free File is a partnership between the IRS and tax software providers that allows you to prepare and file your taxes electronically for free. To file for an extension using IRS Free File, visit the IRS website and click on the "Free File" link. You will be asked to create an account and then you can follow the instructions to file for an extension.

What Happens After You File for an Extension

Once you have filed for an extension, the IRS will send you a confirmation letter. This letter will include your new filing deadline, which will be October 15th. You should keep this letter for your records.

Remember, filing for an extension does not give you more time to pay your taxes. If you owe taxes, you should make estimated tax payments throughout the year to avoid penalties and interest.
